Velosity, a provider of custom contract manufacturing, injection molding, precision machining and tool building for medical devices, announced the opening of the new Velosity Engineering, Launch and Optimization Lab (Velosity Lab) at its Brooklyn Park, Minnesota facility.

Velosity made a multi-million-dollar investment to build the Velosity Lab, a hands-on precision machining development center designed to help medical device manufacturer customers innovate, accelerate new product launches, improve part performance and strengthen strategic partnerships.

“We’re incredibly excited to open our doors and partner with our customers to begin using the Velosity Lab,” said Velosity CEO Dave Hemink in a statement. “This dedicated development environment will accelerate projects, strengthen collaboration, and spark new possibilities together.”

Previously, development work was performed on production machines, creating delays, scheduling conflicts and limited flexibility. The Velosity Lab eliminates these constraints by providing a dedicated environment for early stage development, guided by a Phase Gate Development Process that ensures parts move efficiently from concept to production once designs are validated.

In the lab, the Velosity team will work directly with customers to share and test ideas for product optimization, run real-time simulations and iterate to ultimately determine the best option for the finished medical device all in a single lab session. This capability can reduce or even eliminate prototyping steps, cutting cost and time.

The Velosity Lab is designed to help medical device customers, including:

  • Faster Time-to-Market: In the competitive medical device industry, speed to market is critical and provides a competitive advantage. Dedicated development equipment reduces lead times for functional samples from 4–6 months to just 2–3 weeks.
  • Continuous Improvement: Enhancements to existing production parts can be made without disrupting ongoing manufacturing.
  • Customer Trust and Innovation Showcase: Tangible prototypes and agile development strengthen original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partnerships and highlight Velosity’s commitment to quality and operational excellence.

The Velosity Lab features advanced precision machining, inspection, and prototyping technologies, including:

  • Citizen Swiss machines for ultra-precise turning and milling (L20XII, L12X, L12VII)
  • 3-, 4-, and 5-axis vertical milling machines, plus a Fanuc Robodrill and IPG laser welder for complex part fabrication
  • Metrology and inspection equipment, including Hexagon CMM, OGP Smartscope Quest 300, and Keyence LM-X Vision Measurement System
  • Additive and prototyping capabilities, with Bambu Lab 3D printers
