GE HealthCare today announced an initiative with AMN Healthcare aimed at helping address the critical shortage of radiologic technologists (rad tech) in the healthcare industry. This initiative helps healthcare providers meet their immediate staffing needs through AMN Healthcare’s comprehensive workforce solutions and GE HealthCare’s innovative technologies and training expertise.
Several factors contributing to the current shortage of rad techs include burnout, often caused by emotional exhaustion and feeling underappreciated at work, and the impact of COVID-19 or COVID-related policies impacting rad techs.1 Globally, 42% of clinicians are actively considering leaving the healthcare industry.2 In addition, as the U.S. population ages, and demand for radiology services and exams increases, the number of radiologic technologists graduating from rad tech schools has not kept pace with demand.3
“Radiologic technologist shortages put pressure on healthcare providers who are navigating increased demand and a backlog of scans to be read. We understand how stressful it can be for patients and their family members when waiting for scans needed to diagnose a medical condition and begin treatment. A robust pipeline of rad techs can directly impact how healthcare providers are able to care for their patients," said Catherine Estrampes, president & CEO, US & Canada, GE HealthCare. “We are excited to work with AMN Healthcare to explore ways to address the critical shortage of rad techs across the healthcare industry. Combined with GE HealthCare’s well-established and innovative technology solutions, we can now also assist in supporting the staffing needs of healthcare providers.”
Through this initiative, GE HealthCare can provide training on GE HealthCare technologies, including Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Interventional Vascular, Xray, Nuclear Medicine, PET and Mammography, coupled with AMN Healthcare’s solutions to help ensure healthcare providers have access to trained professionals who can quickly integrate into clinical settings and deliver immediate impact for healthcare providers.
“This initiative represents a significant step forward in our work to tackle workforce challenges in healthcare,” said Robin Johnson, group president of Nursing and Allied Solutions, AMN Healthcare. “Together with GE HealthCare, we are dedicated to implementing comprehensive, innovative solutions that not only meet the immediate demand for skilled rad techs but also strategically prepare for the evolving needs of future healthcare professionals and their career trajectories.”
This initiative will help to develop capacity in the market and the next generation of rad techs to meet the rising demand in this specialized field of care. It is focused on meeting healthcare provider needs across the traditional hospital setting and the outpatient imaging environments to help unlock efficiencies, increase clinician productivity and enhance the patient experience.
